What’s a Butkus?
Dive play is the most important play in the game. Goal: One yard. The quarterback takes the trap, pivots, and passes the football to the back – who hits the tailback and moves forward. The goal is to gain a yard or two. It’s not pretty and rarely makes a big play, but it builds confidence by creating clear and achievable goals. Simply put, if you don’t have the drive and determination to gain one yard, how are you going to score a touchdown?
Looking for something means you are looking for it! Finding your Butkus is the key to finding something you have. There is another part of you, hidden in your mind, perhaps, just hidden in plain sight. It’s right under your nose – in your heart.
In Kevin Costner’s movie “A Field of Dreams” his character, Ray Kinsella, hears a voice from a cornfield, “If you build it he will come.” He is asked to trust a whisper and feel a feeling. The voice wants him to listen, then act – by faith.
While tall wheat may not be calling to you, I’m sure you’ve thought of it while showering or driving. There is no need to act.
Your Butkus, I say with a wink, can be found a little south by reaching out and finding your rear end. With both hands I might add! Maybe the reason you haven’t seen your Butkus yet is because you live on it!
So what is Butkus?
No, not But-Kis, but pronounced But-Kus. You speak directly and always think. If you are a sports fan you have probably heard the name, Dick Butkus. In fact, most people in North America have heard the name, although they may not know who or what it is.
Yes, it’s a strange name.
However, there is nothing funny about the style and the celebrity status that this name represents. As a four-year-old, when I first heard this name and saw the NFL appearance of Dick Butkus, I was amazed. It means more like, “in fear”.
NFL movies say; “Dick Butkus played football with a passion for faith and a passion, not for excellence, but for mastery and humility. Butkus was the most dangerous quarterback in the game. and the NFL is full of stories about people who crossed him. He was an unstoppable force, he was Moby Dick in a gold bowl. It was done on the football field by someone , anywhere, anytime.”
Dick Butkus is remembered as the toughest man to ever play pro football. He is a man, no matter what; it never ends. He never won a championship or a Superbowl; hell his team was so bad they never made it to the playoffs. However, that didn’t stop him from becoming one of the best to ever play NFL football.
I, as a twelve-year-old football player, wanted to be Dick Butkus. Everything from her dove toe walk, to the colors of her dress is awesome. It took all my thinking. The way he stood back, crouching like a mountain lion ready to pounce, was terrifying. But when he moved, he was steadfast, and he ran to leave; he was unlike any other player on the field.
Butkus, to me, is a metaphor for movement and a symbol of hard work and achievement. No matter what the odds are, you never give up. If I order my Butkus, I know what to do and when to do it.
Now that I’ve painted a picture of Butkus’ character and his importance, I have to tell you, I didn’t get there sooner. After all, I have known for more than thirty years. I had to look deep into my memories to find something I already knew.
And then the massage! “It’s useless if you don’t know how to use it” is a topic to be discussed later, but for now, it’s well said; Just knowing something doesn’t help.
Smart people are overworked, underpaid, and underappreciated by others, but – mostly by themselves. As Michelangelo, the great artist (not the ninja turtle) said “The biggest problem for most of us is not setting our goal high and falling short; it’s setting our goal down to the bottom and meet the mark!”
Have you met the minimum requirement? Looking for success in all the wrong places? You were taught, like me, that it took years of suffering to achieve. Is it beyond your control? Were you told to learn more, build skills you don’t have and go places that someone else has set you up for? So, when you come and tell me again, life is hard, hard. You have to be strong and learn to put up with what you don’t want, – to get what you want! Crazy.
I say, what you want – you want, what you seek, you seek. What you want is not just to be, it’s right, it’s inside of you. It’s not difficult, but yes, it’s intense and requires your attention! Have you heard, I really understand the natural laws of the world? I argue that the “Law of Attraction” is not an external magnet to get what you want, but it synchronizes your desires to bring you what you have.
In the movie ‘The Lion King”, Mufasa calls down from the sky to his son, Simba, and orders him to “Remember who you are!” All you have to do is find out, just remember “what” it’s up to you to guide you Find your Butkus.
Kill it; Remember who you are! Find your own words, Find your??? in Life!
Just like playing basic diving, create a goal you can trust – one that builds confidence. Be gentle and warm like a dog. Guaranteed to get yards whenever you want. The act of being positive puts you in the right frame of mind to begin to see what is important.
It’s not about finding what works in life, no, it’s about finding your happiness. Trust me, if my dream was a man named Dick Butkus, would you like it better? Open the door to your desires, listen to your dream field and let all the people, places and things you want come to you.
