The Basics of Anime-From A-Z

Aanime – Anime is an abbreviation for animation in Japan. It is written in Katakana, as it is an English version and is based on an animation conceived and written in Japan. Yet there is a style and meaning to anime that is universally recognized as unique to Japanese animation. The simple and complex nature of the characters and the amazing layouts and themes are the most talked about of the year. The development of some people through a series of tests through the unique Japanese methods of endurance and strength.

Baka – Japanese slang for stupid. It’s a favorite to depict quirky, oddball, and historical characters in anime. Usually given by a woman to a man, it’s great to catch all the gossip about a nerdy, insecure man (and sometimes a woman) doing stupid things. So, Baka.

Cosplay – The unique and most important role for anime fans around the world to dress up as their favorite anime and video game characters to meet other super fans and compare their loyalties . Because anime is (mostly) drawn to scale, the clothes are brightly colored and very neutral, it’s easy to recognize the talented people in this world. Competitions and competitions are held every year. It’s an underground aspect of the culture that has gone underground in recent years.

Doujinshi – The Japanese word for fan made manga based on historical figures. The anime looks exactly like the Star Wars books. There is a huge market for these fictional characters in Japan, and due to the large pool of talent the quality is equal to or greater than the source material. It seems like a good way to go. Keep out future workers, write for free.

Ecchi – A Japanese word that translates to ‘strange’. It’s usually used to describe all schoolgirl animes whose skirts are about two inches above their pant line, yet they’re still on. It’s not exactly like Hentai in that it tries not to do anything, but the fan service and plot points are off the map.

Fan – For American anime connoisseurs, fandom is one of the ways to get into some anime, and until now the only way. Fans of Fansubbing (fans who produced subtitles of shows ripped directly from Japanese TV), Fandubbing (less work, and often more funnier fan stories), Fanfiction (the written form of Doujinshi, often lots of Ecchi), and Fan Service (where a show does something over the top or has a great idea because they know it’s what fans are looking for). The fan is what drives the market for anime, especially in America which until recently was mostly a black market.

Gundam – One of the main characters of anime. It’s been almost 25 years or so now, there have been over 25 series and movies since Gundam started in 1979, and it’s still one of the most popular series every year, and the growth of late careers. The show has been one of the pioneers of the big and best mech anime underground in America for years…and it’s made for some really funny cosplayers.

Hentai – Of course, regardless of art form, when you have a large fan base, someone will screw it up. The anime has nothing that can’t be seen by the uninitiated, with lots of awesome monster trucks and sometimes a theme. Yes, as with many of Japan’s best art, hentai sometimes try to inject a bit of intelligence into their mindless characters. And the quality of the output is higher than normal. It speaks to the nature of porn, I think. He controls the industry.

Idol – The idol mentality that rules the Japanese pop culture world. Their singers are everywhere, their movie stars are singers, their movie stars are TV presenters. Their movie stars-singers-TV hosts are voice actors. It’s all circular and means mass production in a crowded country of 140 million. And it leaks through the shows they do, and the mass production of the shows (usually one every week until the show ends…for some shows that’s years) and all the production values referring to this.

Jump – Shonen Jump is a monthly manga publication in Japan that breaks some of the biggest names in anime. Dragonball, Naruto, One Piece, Kenshin and more. Popular anime for kids that run the charts come out of this little gem. And now here in the US. Power in circulation.

Kawaii – Japanese word for cute. And if you describe it like this, half of what will happen. It’s so beautiful, even nauseating at times. The ability to turn the ugliest and most disturbing things into cute and cuddly mascots is a very Japanese strength. Just look at half the Pokemon. It looks ugly, but it’s beautiful.

Love Hina – Love Hina is not fictional, but it is the best – fantasy anime for sleep. So it’s its own sub-genre now. A misguided young man who has no luck with women finds himself in a situation where he is surrounded by women every day, who eventually attack him and make his life hell, while at the same time falling in love with him. Ecchi moments abound, often ending up with a bloody nose on the rocks outside of a hot tub somewhere.

Mframework – Yes, the parent of all things. Manga is a comic book, a hand-drawn formula for everyone. Dating back to the early 19th century woodblock art and earlier, Manga takes exciting stories and organizes them into fun, easy-to-read comic books. That’s not to say that the Supermans and Detective Comics of America didn’t help in this regard.

Neon Genesis Evangelion – A release of the great mech anime, Evangelion burst into thousands of fans because some anime had dared before, but few succeeded – mature and intelligent . A very common theme these days, Evangelion managed to take biblical, complex social, and personal themes and make them into a funny, epic apocalyptic 24 episode series and 2 movies.

Otaku – in what is actually an insult in Japan, translating roughly as ‘you’…but more commonly known as ‘no-life geek who spends all his time building GUNDAM models…’ The definition is little caustic on our Te side of the Pacific Ocean, it’s meant for someone who likes the depth of Japanese pop culture, watches anime after school, and draws notes from them excellent presentation in their notebooks. There is more of a team in school than just a sense of humor. However, the course is changing quickly, as the anime scene is growing here in the States.

Qokemon – Pokemon is the new generation of children’s anime born out of commercial interest, used to sell video games, video games used to sell the show. It’s been almost 10 years now, and new parts keep popping up. If the Japanese do it right, it’s merchandise, and Pokemon is still selling, and it’s very much marketed to the new generation of kids these days.

Queen Emeraldas – I’m having trouble here because Q as we know is the worst letter of the alphabet to make an ABC list. Queen Emeraldas is a good anime though. An OAV created in 1998 as a spin-off of the Harlock and Galaxy Express 999 series, Queen Emeraldas continues the story of a popular character if you haven’t seen any of the previous shows it won’t make sense to you.

Rurouni Kenshin – Kenshin is the great story of a wandering samurai during the Meiji period of Japan called Kenshin. He found a small art school in the new city, and after rescuing the young heir he stayed with him and did various quests to help the government he helped to build a few years earlier and survive. He’s a very badass swordsman and attracts a nice little group of characters. I don’t know if it’s the biggest anime in the world, but it’s one of my favorite shows, so it’s on the list.

Shoujo – The term used to describe anime for girls. Sailormoons and Cardcaptor Sakuras are out there that fit here. It is very interesting to follow and very popular here and in Japan. This is a testament to the popularity of subculture when it takes time to stop documenting violent fights between half-witted men to propose to teenage girls.

Tezuka Osamu – The Walt Disney of anime, Dr. Tezuka created Astroboy, Kimba the White Lion, Metropolis and many other anime classics that created an art form. He is the person you want to look to whenever you ask, “who is responsible for all this?”

Urusei Yatsura – A popular 1970s and 80s franchise with nearly 200 episodes, 10 movies and several OVAs. It is very important for a group of “foreigners” (literal translation) who are invading and oppressing the earth. They were all girls, part of the beginning of what became Love Hina, a young boy surrounded by strange, sensual women. Yes, they know how to do a show there.

Vwork oice – Come. Is it a proper animation? Unlike the American animation industry, Japan’s voice acting pool is large and talented. American companies use the same people all the time, pay them peanuts, and usually suck their jobs. In Japan, the respect of doing their job is much stronger…they don’t suck.

Wings of Honneamise – Another popular anime, this is the first film produced by the super studio Gainax (the same guys who did Evangelion and others). It’s usually science fiction, military fantasy with some twists on history and technology. It’s one of my favorite examples of how anime tends to bend the genres it controls. It’s out there, so we love it.

X – Yes, only X. From Clamp, a group of female artists (and the quality of the work) that is useless, X is one of their previous films, which is being developed into a series. It seems like Shoujo doesn’t cater to girls only.

Yaoi – The gay version of Ecchi, Yaoi is usually a homoerotic service of men in the form of sexual activity and closeness to each other. When it’s well-produced, you can expect the right things, and Yaoi’s lesbians are very popular in Japan.

Z, Dragon Ball – I cheated again, why? Dragon Ball Z is one of the main reasons why the anime went mainstream here in the States after all, with two hundred plus long memorable (and I mean looooong) episodes. battles, the dragon ball Z took the fan base of all the youth rebels. vulnerable children across the country and holding them for 20 years (yeah, yeah…stop looking at me).

So there you have it. 26 keys to understanding anime subculture, a veritable AZ of what you need to know… except Q and Z.
