The Atkins Diet – Why It’s My Personal Choice

From the time I was a child, through my glorious 20s (thankfully after I had nothing to say) and into my early 30s (before I had my son), keeping at my weight there is no problem. I always trusted that by watching my food, if my weight went up, some exercise was all it took to get back to my ideal weight.

But things change

After my son was born (and I gained 60 pounds during pregnancy), my tank – still a rock – decided to be more or less spirited. In particular, when I was about 21 years old I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism (which is why I gain weight easily and have other negative symptoms). I did blood tests every year and took a small pill every day. However, even that changed after giving birth. A normal thyroid runs in the 0.4 to 0.6 range, mine is 10.0 – a sure sign that my body is out of control.

Even at the age of 16, obsessed with keeping a trim figure, I would “think” about food for myself. I remember it was just eggs, toast, and something to drink. And I lost 18 pounds in two weeks of doing it (eggs are the secret).

Later in life, I went on the Scarsdale Diet. I can tell you that it really works, but only when you start to really hate tomatoes. Food is on the menu with Scarsdale, and lots of vegetables and fruits. It’s very balanced. You don’t just lick anything “sweet.” Oh, I can’t have black coffee.

Then go to the “food in the box” variations. Sure it works, but after about a week, the smell of the cardboard box and your food become less desirable… maybe that’s how it works. Well, combining enough carbs, protein, and fat is the secret.

It led me to … the Atkins Diet.

I didn’t just jump into Atkins. I read the book cover to cover and researched some of those books. Good, scientifically sound facts – and an eye-opening look at the artist who tells us what’s good to eat and what’s not for us only their fruits are good).

Well, research behind me and my mighty The Atkins Diet in hand, I purged my kitchen of all the bad (but wonderful) foods and began a 14-day diet.

Sure, the scale has moved (and continues to), but most importantly and almost immediately, my clothes start to “feel right” again.

You will be on the 14 day diet for (duh) 14 days. However, if you are overweight you can go on less than 20 grams of carbs for a long time. Yes, if you are overweight, it is still healthy.

I will not continue to talk about the various aspects of this “life time, change your eating habits”. It’s all in the book, and I suggest you read it. A lot of people I meet tell me, “Yeah, but that’s not a good diet. You’re eating too much of ___ or ____. It’s not healthy.”

My first question to people who say bad things is, “Have you read the book?”

The answer, when something very ridiculous was thrown at me, was a noise… no. However, they still carry the necessary untrustworthy authority. I just smiled and continued. I am thin, many others are not (I am not very strong), they need weight maintenance.

To tell you about Atkins, I started it again (yes I know it’s a lifelong diet but when did we, the American population, commit to it?) late last year (around August 2005) I have 30 negative pounds sitting on my butt that I need to get rid of before I’m 50 or so. Pretzels and high carb snacks (you just grab a quick handful) are my downfall.

By February of 2006, I had lost (and kept off) 33 pounds. That’s seven months of eating the right combination of protein, fat, and carbohydrates as outlined by the Atkins diet plan. Averaging less than 5 pounds a month, or 1.25 pounds a week (give or take), this is a great way to lose weight while you can keep it off.

I also made my own milkshake which works like a charm. Ice, Carb Hood chocolate drink (still chocolate), a portion of Splenda and/or Torani Sugar Free Hazelnut, and a can of Atkin’s Chocolate Royale. It fills you up and loads you with vitamins and minerals, and best of all it does a great job of losing weight.

So now you know what I mean about weight loss and moderation. But before I go, I would also like to stir your mind to this beautiful reality.

Why is it so surprising that so many businesses are growing and “prepare our food in a box?” What’s the first thing they tell you? It’s all about the glycemic index, of course, and if done in the right proportions for you, “the pounds will just melt away!”

Yes, they are right. But these same people, along with amazing pill makers and the “health-conscious” community, have recently been telling you that the Atkins diet is bad!

Duh… Atkins wrote about the good carb combo diet decades ago. He has years of research and facts to back up what he always says.

Combine the right foods for one person and anyone can lose weight. Throw in a walk to get your butt up off the couch and get moving, and you’ve got a great recipe for losing weight and keeping it off for the rest of your life.

Figure out what works for you, do it, stick with it, and you can be healthy and fit and feel good as nature for YOU.
