Tamil Film Industry – Trends in Recent Times!
Whether a movie is going to hit or miss is not the only guide to show its accuracy. The correct method is to judge it by its content and style of communication, I mean the text and presentation. Without these, the very purpose of filmmaking will not be fulfilled properly. With over two hundred films released every year, the quality:quantity ratio is unbelievable. No one thought that we would release mediocre films compared to the black and white era.
With the collapse of narratives since the time of Shivaji Ganesan, Tamil cinema has shifted from scripted films to profitable films and more. In the 60’s and 70’s, movies used to be heavily scripted and we could see the actors moving with passion and the feeling of seeing ourselves on screen. This is missing in today’s movies. We may be inspired from a Hollywood movie (or a Korean movie) or recreated from other languages but never inspire people around the world to follow us. The name Kollywood (a word that doesn’t exist in the dictionary) is western-inspired. We still love our Tamil movies, because of our limited exposure to Hollywood.
Currently Tamil cinema is in a trap with a defined formula which indicates a lot of songs, fights, comedy, romance and emotion in the film. So we call it the “best mix” for the block. Apparently, the actors also fell into this trap and became a safe haven for punishments. And then the directors stopped trying, and got involved with the needs of the audience. In Kollywood, every actor is associated with some kind of work. Mass hero, love, action king and more. Therefore, the actor is often forced to choose a role based on the expectations of his fan. Our actors are very talented. They are better than those of us who criticize them, but the hope of their fans will prevent them from trying to do things like that. So who are we to blame? what? actor? managers? I say to everyone, in the same order. The film should be the same at first. If it’s a comedy movie, it’s all jokes. If it’s exciting, it should be jam-packed with movement and excitement. I don’t understand the need for a chase song in a thriller or fight scenes in a comedy. There’s no pointless music if the scene calls for it, and overall, we don’t want to see 2 hour 40 minute movies again. This model-based movie concept needs to change.
The reason there aren’t enough films about the future is because the directors don’t see a future. Except for some directors who are passionate about putting their soul into their films, some directors think that filmmaking is just a job. Filmmaking is an art, and if one makes it a profession, it loses that magic, which is seen in the films of yesteryear. The director must carefully consider the outcome of the film, which is important because it creates a road map for his team and motivates them. The manager must be able to express these visionary ideas. The director took a lot of risks to please a lot of people along the way, and when he looks back, the film turned out differently than he intended to make. To think, make a film and stick to your project is a different kind of courage, very few directors. The director must be able to stand with his script without changing it based on the character of the hero or the expectations of the fans. If this small change is made, then it is sure that the quality will increase.
Nowadays the success of a movie in the opening weekend depends on the amount of marketing by the movie promoters. They flood the TV channels and vehicles carrying the best aspects of the movie. Fooled by the trailer, we walked into the theater to find out the real story. And that’s how distributors make money in the opening weekend. Can’t blame them, they are pure business people. They are doing their job, so the directors should stick to their job, which is to make quality films without worrying about profits and opening sales. Overall, everyone should stick to their jobs and try not to poke their noses.
Films like Kahaani and Arundathi should have heroines. It’s time we stop using our women for songs and love. Managers need to write resumes to demonstrate their skills. Making Indian movies is more difficult than Hollywood ones because the masala factor is present in every frame. Managers need to focus on one story in an effective way. Even animations in Indian movies are very dull and ineffective. In short, Indian and Hollywood movies have the same theme, good fight against bad guys, good effort to save the nation, few fights and little kisses. But there is a different way to bring it out as a package. It means delivering that message in a gift-wrapped box. If you take movies like Xmen, harry potter, that’s delusional but fantasy. Even if it’s a mistake, westerners know how to show the dumbest things in the world and run away with a lot of applause from the audience. Maybe with the show. As much as we imagine, the songs, the fights and the main theme “masala” are still there.
I feel sad when Tamil viewers stand and clap for characters like superman, batman or any other person. In fact, we don’t envy them but we wonder when it comes to crying for our actors. I know that our writers are very talented at thinking outside the box but when they deliver a winning image they also deliver their fans. How long will we continue to watch mass masala movies, without quality script? In addition, the target audience should be educated enough to accept the directors’ innovations. The very fear of not being accepted by the audience drives many talented artists to revise their writings and presentations. As the audience does not change their perspective and accept all kinds of good movies, the quality does not improve.
People are busy fighting over who will be the next star but are not worried about the future of Tamil cinema. We can’t beat, but we criticize Sachin, we can’t lead, but we mock our Prime Minister, all we have to do is talk within the four walls in front of the television. . Salman Rushdie has described the Indian film industry as “Epico-Mythico-Tragico-Comico-Super-Sexy-High-Masala-Art”. It’s really hard and honest! Thanks for adding the word “Art”, sir.
We have to change, they change and make better movies.
